About Sister Maureen Geary, O.P.
For many years, Sister Maureen has been a true friend to our campus and a faithful
presence representing the Dominican Sisters ~ Grand Rapids with our students, faculty,
staff, and alumni.
As both a Certified Public Accountant and an attorney, Sister Maureen brings a twin set of skills that will serve our community particularly well at this time. She has already done so, contributing much to the College’s success in her roles on the faculty, as a member of the staff, and on our Board. Sister Maureen has served Aquinas as:
- An assistant professor teaching business law and accounting.
- Vice president of finance and controller for six years.
- A trustee for 12 years. During this time, she was also active on the finance, investments, benefits, and Dominican heritage committees of the board.
“It’s been an incredible honor to be a part of Aquinas’ growth over the years, and I’m deeply humbled and blessed to have been selected by the trustees to serve as our College’s 10th president,” Geary said. “After spending many wonderful decades building relationships both on and off campus, I feel uniquely called to lead Aquinas and keep our forward motion as we build our next chapter – together.
“As I step into this new role, I remain committed to leading with faith, deep listening, and an unwavering passion to ensure Aquinas can continue to thrive as a Catholic liberal arts institution guided by our Dominican pillars of prayer, service, study, and community.”
A native of Grand Rapids, she was educated by the Dominican Sisters ~ Grand Rapids at Immaculate Heart of Mary and Catholic Central High School. She then went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from the University of Notre Dame, a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Michigan, and a master’s degree from Catholic Theological Union in Chicago. In 2018, she was awarded an honorary doctor of laws degree from Aquinas College.
Sister Maureen has held many leadership roles within the Dominican Sisters, including Prioress from 2012 to 2018, Vicaress, Treasurer, and Councilor for Finance from 2006 to 2012, and Treasurer and Councilor from 2018 to 2024.
Geary is a member of the Michigan Bar Association and a CPA in the state of Michigan.
